Germany's Lufthansa airline hopes to put the brakes on the practice of "hidden city" ticketing, saying a passenger owes it more than $2,000 because he didn't use part of his round-trip route. Michael Probst/AP hide caption

Germany's Lufthansa Group Airlines is suing a passenger who found a cheap way to travel between several cities in Europe and the U.S., saying the customer broke its rules when he skipped part of his return flight on a round-trip ticket from Oslo to Seattle. Now it wants him to pay more than $2,000 to make up the difference.

The Lufthansa passenger paid 657 euros ($741, at today's rate) to fly business class from Oslo to Seattle and back, with layovers in Frankfurt. He booked his flight on April 8, 2016, and traveled early the next month. But instead of making the entire trip, he got off his return flight in Frankfurt. From there, he flew to Berlin on a separate Lufthansa ticket.

The US government has fined German airline Lufthansa $25,000 for illegal taxation, after the airline inadvertently charged passengers taxes that were not applicable. The taxes that the US government's Department of Transportation is referring to were fees that Lufthansa applied to passengers using frequent flyer reward miles tickets.

Nearly all counties in the world levy a departure tax on passengers when they are leaving the country by air. This tax may also apply to those who leave a country by ship. For the most part, however, it concerns air passengers who routinely have this tax included in the price of their ticket.

While the United States government charges passengers $18.60, this tax only applies to tickets bought with cash or by credit/debit card. Those who book a ticket using reward or air miles have the fee waived. In other words, if you are flying using your air miles you do not have to pay the departure tax.

In 2018, Germany's largest airline filed suit against a passenger who paid for a round-trip flight in business class from Oslo to Seattle via Frankfurt. The airline alleges that the passenger went to Seattle but then intentionally missed their return flight and instead booked another flight, with the final destination in Berlin. Lufthansa claimed the passenger intentionally engaged in the practice known as hidden-city ticketing to save money on airfare.

Hidden-city ticketing basically means booking a multi-city ticket without then flying on the last leg of the itinerary. That's because in some cases, the most direct itinerary or a one-way ticket cost more than an itinerary that terminates in a different city, or round-trip ticket.

In the Lufthansa case, sent the man a revised invoice for his ticketed itinerary, requesting additional payment of more than $2,300 for the going rate of what effectively became a multi-city flight instead of a round-trip ticket.

The answer is "it varies." As a general rule, it's difficult for airlines to prove that passengers purchased flights deliberately intending to skip one or more legs of the trip. However, you'll most likely find that the rest of your itinerary will be swiftly canceled, which is why "skiplaggers" usually only ditch the very last leg of travel.

If there were exceptional circumstances that necessitated the cancellation, Lufthansa will not be required to pay compensation. Airlines, for example, are occasionally forced to cancel flights owing to an incident at the airport or inclement weather. The airline is exempt from paying compensation because it is not to blame for the incident. Even so, they must provide passengers with an alternative flight or a full refund. And when your flight is cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, because it is a rare occurrence that does not qualify for compensation, you can only request a refund for your airline ticket after the cancellation.

All these initiatives are about truly digitizing a process which was originally done for paper tickets and now is being done in an electronic way. This is where we still see challenges because if you implement something like continuous pricing, sometimes you need to do certain workarounds, you need to translate certain things into these legacy parts.

In the first case we discuss, plaintiff Baumeister had bought a ticket from Lufthansa for a pair of flights: from Stuttgart, his place of origin, to Munich, and then from Munich to San Francisco, his destination. The first flight was, as indicated on his itinerary, to be flown not by Lufthansa but by a regional German airline (since defunct) named Augsburg Airways. But that flight, the first leg of Baumeister's journey, was cancelled, and though Lufthansa arranged substitute air transportation for Baumeister from Stuttgart to San Francisco he arrived more than 17 hours after he was originally scheduled to arrive.

Enough about Baumeister's case. Our other case, Varsamis v. Iberia (as we'll call the carrier for the sake of brevity), is interestingly different. For the suit is not against the carrier that issued the tickets but against the operating carrier. Yet again the passenger plaintiffs lost in the district court.

Passengers who are traveling with Lufthansa reserved e-tickets can do their web check-in online to reserve their preferred seat using the PNR number. Lufthansa airlines web check-in starts 48 hours before departure & closes 12 hours prior to the time of departure for economic classes. Passengers can also web check-in to select the desired seat using mobile check-in that is available at a nominal charge. After check-in using mobile, the boarding pass along with the receipt will be forwarded to the registered mail ID of the passenger.

For INTERNATIONAL travel (including the domestic segment of an international itinerary), airlines are responsible for these items if they have accepted them for transportation. This applies even if passengers did not disclose, when they checked-in, that these items were packed in the bag.

Some airlines now offer applications for cell phones, tablets, and other electronic devices, which provide passengers with data on the location of their baggage. It may be helpful to use this technology to locate your baggage, if available.

Passengers can access the digital editions up to three days before their date of travel by going to lh.com/eJournals via the Lufthansa app, and entering their name, plus either their booking code or ticket number, passengers can select their favorite titles, download them and then save them on their own electronic device.

Dominik,Thank you for your post.Who do you think is liable for not issuing the e-ticket, the passenger or the airline? In other words, is the passenger responsibility to communicate to the airline that the e-ticket has not been issued?Thank you

Because Lufthansa allows all ticketed passengers at least one personal item and one standard carry on, you may be able to avoid checked baggage fees (and the dreaded wait at the baggage claim carousel after your flight) by simply limiting what you pack to your carry-ons. Just be sure to abide by size and weight requirements for carry-ons, as you will be asked to check and pay for any baggage that is too big to carry aboard the flight.

Having booked and successfully paid for your online air ticket, you will see a confirmation page with the Booking Confirmation code and an e-ticket number. You will also receive an e-mail confirming your booking and online payment with an electronic ticket (attached in PDF format) containing detailed information about your journey.

In case of suspicion of fraud, Air Astana reserves the right to make a complete investigation, cancel a ticket and report fraud details to respective authorities and the police. Any passenger found to be travelling on a fraudulently purchased ticket will be blacklisted.

In the event that carrier does not have reliable confirmation that payment has been validly made or if carrier advises passenger for the need for additional information, carrier may request additional information from the passenger(s) and/or, when a ticket was paid by a person who is not the passenger, carrier may request the presence of the cardholder at the airport any time after ticket issuance including at check-in, prior to travel or after travel has commenced. Carrier also reserves the right to require another form of payment should a passenger not be able to reliably confirm that payment was validly made and/or provide the additional information requested.

Refusal to Transport [...] When the passenger fails to provide additional information and/or is unable to ensure the presence of the cardholder at the airport, or if the passenger is unable to present another form of payment for its ticket as requested by the carrier pursuant to tariff rule 25, or wherever carrier is unable to reliably confirm that the passenger holds a valid ticket.

If the Credit card holder is the passenger or one of the passengers, then the credit card will have to be produced at the time of Check In. If the Credit Card holder is not one of the passengers, then a copy of the credit card (both front and back), self-attested by the credit card holder should be produced at the time of Check In. In addition to this, it is also required to produce a letter, signed by the credit card holder, authorizing the use of the credit card for the purchase of the ticket. The letter should mention the names of the passengers, date of travel and sector of travel. This letter, along with the self-attested copy of the credit card will have to be submitted at Check In desk. Hence please carry two copies of the same if you are traveling on the return sector. 2ff7e9595c
